As we welcome the crisp, cool days of autumn, we are very pleased to host our annual Fall Gold show in our Jackson, Wyoming gallery. Once again, our show pays tribute to the beauty and mystery of nature as seen thru the eyes and interpreted on canvas by our masterful landscape and wildlife painters. Likewise, we see the wondrous world of animals in their natural environment thru the skilled and discerning eyes of our wildlife and sporting sculptors. I can’t help but feel that in our fast paced and often frenzied world, many of us just forget to “stop and smell the roses.” It is my hope that our Fall Gold show will serve to remind us all just how precious our natural world is and to slow down and truly absorb all it has to offer!
As part of this event we are pleased to have a special focus on new works by Bonnie Marris, Andrew Denman, Ralph Oberg, and Kyle Sims. These names are synonymous with excellence in wildlife art and their artwork champions the cause of wildlife awareness and conservation. We invite you to come meet the artists in person during our afternoon reception at the gallery on September 20th. We are also very pleased to feature spectacular and unique pieces of western furniture. Our furniture artisans are among the best in the country and include John Gallis, Brad Greenwood, Mike Roths and Cappy White.
And finally, Saturday, September 20 also marks the date of our second annual Jackson Hole Art Auction which Trailside Galleries will be presenting at the Center for the Arts beginning at 12:30 pm. I do hope you can join us for what promises to be an extraordinary weekend of art filled events! Just a few short weeks ago, on June 26th, we hosted the grand opening of our new gallery space, held in conjunction with our season opening show. More than 25 of our gallery artists were present for the festivities along with some 500 guests. A live jazz band added to the lively atmosphere as champagne and delicious hors d'oeurves were passed around. Our lovely sculpture garden was quite a hit as guests spilled out into the garden to enjoy the warm evening air. We are all quite delighted with the new gallery and I hope that you will have the opportunity to visit our new home in Jackson in the near future! Looking ahead towards the rest of the summer, please note that you can visit our website to see periodic updates on new and incoming art and get an early bird view of our August and September shows. With the arrival of our April newsletter, I hope and trust you are enjoying a beautiful spring season wherever you may be! With spring comes a sense of renewal and the world seems to dress itself in a palette of beautiful and refreshing colors. And so it is for us here at Trailside Galleries as we present our April shows and special artist features.
Last April, we hosted the inaugural "East Meets West" show, which highlighted works by five outstanding Chinese artists: Mian Situ, Z.S. Liang, Tong Luo, Huihan Liu and Calvin Liang. Not surprising, given the outstanding talents of these academically trained artists, collector response to the show was tremendous. Thus, it is our great pleasure to once again host these highly skilled and discerning artists during our second annual "East Meets West" show which runs the first two weeks of April in our Scottsdale gallery. From Mian Situ's jewel toned figurative works to Calvin Liang's sparkling coastal scenes, our show is a testament to the continued surge of Chinese art in the United States, as these artists blend Western influences with their own unique and ancient heritage.
The spring season also means new beginnings in the natural world of our animal friends and Montana wildlife artist Kyle Sims has created a wonderful new collection of paintings showcasing North American big game animals. Kyle is an avid outdoorsman, and he often paints on location which has helped him to develop a precise color palette based on colors he observes in the wild.
We are pleased to bring you our early spring newsletter edition with a focus on the scheduled shows for the month of March. In keeping with tradition, our Western Classics show gets under way on March 19 in Scottsdale featuring all new works from many of the top western artists in the country. The spirit and drama of the west is alive and well, thanks to present day artists who have devoted their careers to faithfully capturing both the historic and contemporary west by way of their artwork. Our show will feature a multitude of subjects related to the west including contemporary working cowboy scenes, the rugged and sweeping landscapes of the west as well as the wildlife indigenous to the region. A new collection of paintings by California impressionist painter Dan McCaw will also grace the gallery walls in Scottsdale during his one-man show which runs through March 16. Our newsletter provides just a sampling of the vibrant and sophisticated new paintings Dan has produced just for our show. A full color catalogue is also available for $15.00 and can be ordered by contacting the gallery.

Dan McCaw is one of America’s most highly respected contemporary impressionists. He first caught the attention of collectors with his sensitive figural work, deeply rooted in the romantic impressionist tradition. Recent years, however, have seen him drawn to the world of abstract art and although still a representational artist at heart, he endeavors in taking expressionistic liberties with his canvas. He notes, “There are times when I want to take a more realistic approach and on other days, I want to be very abstract. This kind of stylistic diversity allows me to experiment with my painting and this is what keeps my work and my life interesting.”
Central to McCaw’s work is the philosophy that less is more. A skilled and discerning interpreter of color harmonies, light and mood, the core of his painting is based on expressing feeling and emotion with the fewest elements. He says, “I try never to be chained to the subject but rather, freed by its endless possibilities. I want the viewer to participate, to engage, to be surprised and to leave with a feeling of discovering something about the subject that otherwise would never have been experienced.”
Dan McCaw lives in the Los Angeles area where he shares a spacious and elegant studio with his artist sons, John and Danny. While his figurative works often take inspiration from the California beach life style, Dan’s many trips to New York City and Paris have influenced his vibrant paintings of cityscapes and café scenes. His book, A Proven Strategy for Creating Great Art was published to critical acclaim in 2002
The Holidays are upon us and, once again, I ask myself where the year has gone. They say time flies when you're having fun, so I must have had a rip-roaring time in 2006! On the following pages, you will find a wonderful selection of small paintings and sculpture that will be featured in two separate Holiday Miniature Shows this December. In Jackson, where we are assured a White Christmas, we celebrate the season with our annual miniature show featuring all our gallery artists. In Scottsdale, we celebrate the Holidays in the desert with Matt Smith and Friends, a special show of small works by local favorite Matt Smith and several of his fellow plein air painters, many of whom are guest artists for this event.
This Holiday season, we also welcome back two old friends, John DeMott and Dan Mieduch, whose marvelous western paintings once again grace our gallery walls.
As we close out 2006, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Cowboy Artists of America for another successful show in October and, in particular, to congratulate Don Crowley for winning the Gold Medal for Oil and David Halbach for his Silver Medal for Watercolor.
On behalf of all the Trailside family, I would like to thank all of our artists, friends and patrons for their continued support and friendship. Our best wishes to you and yours for a very Happy Holiday Season filled with joy and peace!
